Holcim's Ste.Genevieve: The Pieces Come Together

In March of 2006, Holcim (US) Inc. broke ground at the site of their new greenfield plant in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri along the Mississippi River and about 55 miles south of St. Louis. Although situated on nearly 3,900 acres, the actual facility will be built and operated on approximately 1,700 acres, including the quarry and harbor areas. Approximately 2,200 acres is being preserved as conservation easement. At an estimated cost of nearly $1 billion, this state-of-the art, environmentally responsible facility will produce approximately 4 million metric tons of cement per year (or 12,000 mtpd), making it the largest cement-producing plant in the nation and the world's largest single-kiln clinker production line. The pyroprocessing system includes a new-generation clinker cooler and inline preheater with low NOx and CO calciner. Employing about 200 full-time workers, the plant will include a single kiln pyro processing line, including a raw material processing system, coal mill system, product processing system, and material receiving and produce shipping systems. The plant will have its own harbor on the Mississippi River and will receive and ship more than 90% of the plant's materials and products. This is beneficial because water transportation is one of the most energy, environmentally, and economically efficient means to transport the finished product. The quarry will provide high-quality natural resources, which will reduce air emissions from the plant and produce a premium product. Though permitted to extend to about 1,300 acres over 100 years, the quarry will be mined in increments no larger than 200 acres at any given time.
