Hauliers who operate curtainsiders should be fully aware of all the ramifications of the EN 12642-XL standard, given the extensive publicity it has received in recent years. Unfortunately, not all of them are says Tony Sturgess, commercial engineering officer at SDC Trailers. "Some of them still seem to believe that if they acquire an EN 12642-XL curtainsider trailer then they can carry pretty much anything they like without the need for additional load restraint," he observes. "This is incorrect, and if they are not careful then they could find themselves served with a prohibition notice for having an insecure load if their vehicle is stopped."
