The president can stop traffic. Congress can give the green light. The International Bridge Conference, held June 14-16 in Pittsburgh, is winding up for a special Plenary Session on the reauthorization of TEA-21 on Tuesday (11 a.m.-12:15 p.m., June 15). The exact course of the meeting, however, is yet to be determined. That may take an act of Congress. If the bill is passed beforehand, topics addressed will include the bill's implementation and impact on the bridge industry. If debates are still echoing through the Capitol halls, the session will talk about the status of the bill, issue of interest in the legislation and the needs of the bridge industry. Providing a voice will be Peter Ruane (American Road & Transportation Builders Association), John Horsely (American Association of State Highway. & Transportation Officials) and Bud Wright (FHWA). "We were able to get a commitment from three top-level people to come and give a special Plenary Session," Tom Leech, P.E., S.E., 2004 IBC Chairman, told ROADS & BRIDGES. "It will be a panel discussion with views expressed from three different perspectives. We think it should generate high interest."
