Swank Construction Co., based in New Kensington, Pa., was tasked with ultra early entry cutting of over 300,000 linear ft on 8 miles of two-lane highway in western Ohio. Cutting ultra early entry control joints means using a Husqvarna Soff-Cut saw and cutting concrete after finishing and before final set. This is about a one- to two-hour window and enables nice, clean cuts without random cracks forming in the concrete. It also means that the timing is everything and crews must be on-site to hit that window. Swank worked with Knickerbocker Russell in Pittsburgh, Pa., an equipment rental agency, to find the right blade specification for its three Husqvarna Soff-Cut 4000 saws that would be working on the project. The blades would need to quickly cut the 6-8 in. of new concrete poured over existing grounded asphalt. Knickerbocker Russell contacted its Husqvarna representative, who then brought in Stewart Carr, a Husqvarna Soff-Cut Specialist. Carr suggested testing several blades, including a newly developed blade, to find the proper blade to cut the aggregate and sand mix in the concrete. In the end, the Husqvarna FLX Thin blade proved to be the best option, and Swank used them to stay ahead of its deadlines and keep crews working day and night to finish the project. R&B
