Alan Harding Mayhew 1934-2005

Alan Mayhew's death from cancer on 1 October 2005 has deprived the local, national and international communities to which he belonged of an architect with a high sense of public service. In a career spent mainly working in or for developing countries, he never fully received the recognition in Britain that he deserved. He was one of a generation of architects whose philosophy was formed in the decade or so after the Second World War, inspired by Modernism and attracted by the opportunities for architecture in the developing world, especially in the newlyindependent countries of Asia, Africa and the Caribbean.
