In 2006 Madrid's mayor asked landscape architect West 8 to build 80ha of park on top of a buried motorway. It turned the divisive road into a ribbon tying the city together.rnWith A figure of €45bn being spent on new highway construction in the European Union over the period 2007-2013, it's good to know that at least one of the projects is being sunk - quite literally. This is the Madrid city government's plan to take a portion of the M30 ring road, constructed in the 1950s either side of a canalised section of the Manzanares river, and turn it from a traffic-choked inner city artery into a green amenity that could reconnect Madrid's centre to itself.
