The thought of replacement domestic boilers might not set the architect's pulse racing, but it sure does for the investment bankers at Goldman Sachs, which is projecting a lucrative world market of 30 million boilers a year, at over £50 billion per annum - with 1.6 million replaced each year in the UK alone. And if the speakers at last month's Combined Heat and Power Association conference (CHPA) are to be believed, most of those replacements should be CHP units. This should come as no surprise. Natural gas accounts for about 70% of the UK's heating market, a figure that is calculated to rise to 80% after 2020. That said, the government is still committed to achieving a 42% reduction in UK carbon emissions by that date, which means getting greater efficiencies and using less fuel. Cue the Micro CHP market, already poised to step into the domestic breach.
