We all have, or have had, elderly relatives. Most of us will live to a greater age than used to be the norm: it is estimated that one in four of today's children will live past 100. With that increased age comes greater infirmity and dependence, and the demographics of the UK are such that a far greater proportion of the population is moving into this category as the post-war baby-boomers age. We hear routinely about a 'crisis of care'. Scandals of mistreatment or of mismanagement in the sector are multiplying.
