GOING PRIVATE

Since 2008 there have been concerns over the north east's reliance on the public sector. Then, 29% per cent of the economy depended on government funding, compared to the national average of 24% which disguises regions with a far larger proportion of private industry. The north east — with Newcastle and Gateshead at its heart, but stretching from Berwick to Teesside — is a politically very identifiable region. It has been placed at the forefront of the coalition drive to'rebalance'the economy -through the Regional Growth Fund which has £i.4bn to spend across the country in the next three years.
