I don't know what the future holds for the profession but we could make more use of long experience. Take school design: in'Pulling together' (RTBA/March 2011) the author describes a team which apparently offers new and innovative ideas but is in reality a slimmed down version of the system I worked under in the 1960s and which was an acknowledged success (remember the Milan Triennale modular school?). The Department of Education handled the fundamentals and the architects published excellent bulletins. Groups of local authority architects shared in the development of construction methods (Clasp, Scola etc). Each authority's architects then adopted (and adapted) them for local use (localism) and the teachers held annual reviews of the outcomes of our efforts.
