For the purpose of driving a large, fast, bubble chamber expansion valve, an engine has been developed for the linear transport of a mass through a sinusoid motion for one‐half cycle. The unique features are that moving parts are completely inductively coupled with the power source with no physical connections, and that a damper system has been devised giving a critical damping characteristic. Basic equations are given, and the computer solution for a 4.6 kg mass, 3 cm amplitude, and 33 cps frequency is described and compared to actual performance. Scaling laws are quoted.
