Harmonizing Weee Standards

The WEEE Forum's multi-annual projecttakes aim at harmonizing a common set of European standards for the collection, storage, handling, depollution, recovery and recycling of electronics and electrical waste. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, which outlines the responsibilities for collection, recycling and recovery of WEEE, has been transposed'into national legislation across all 27 European Union member states. However, the Directive contains no mechanism guaranteeing the performance of those who provide collection and processing service. With new types of electronics, which require new treatment solutions, reaching markets every day, electronics processors must be discouraged from gaining a competitive advantage by using less environmentally sustainable processing techniques.
