Oregon hits 50 percent recovery mark

Half of the solid waste generated in Oregon was recovered in 2010, meeting a long-sought goal of the state. According to a report released by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, 50 percent of the state's solid waste was recovered in 2010, an increase from the 48.3 percent recorded in 2009 - the year officials had hoped to recover half of the state's refuse. The DEQ calculated the recovery rate by dividing the amount of recovered material by the total amount of all refuse produced in the state, including discards that were both recovered or disposed of. In 2010, the amount of waste produced in Oregon stayed below 5 million tons for the second straight year and per-capita numbers remained the same.
