Golden State processors may see less gold

The California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) is considering a measure that would result in reduced financial support for processors of certain recyclable materials. In California, CalRecycle provides payments to companies that deal in certain recyclable commodities that have particularly volatile markets. The department provides subsidies to these businesses with the aim of making beverage container recycling financially feasible. For instance, it currently costs a company about $84 for each ton of glass it hauls from consumers to processors. Because the glass is valued at $4 a ton, it's a money-losing transaction without a subsidy. To make the transaction viable, CalRecycle provides a "processing payment."
