The present invention provides a method for reducing or eliminating axial separation forces generated between two helical gears. Two helical gears on the same axis will thrust in one of three ways: towards one another, away from one another, or in the same direction. The direction of thrust is dependent on torque direction and hand of the gears. When the design is such that the gears' axial loads are in opposite directions, a helical spline between the two gears can be used to reduce or eliminate the separation forces. Parallel axis or transfer axis gears are commonly designed where one gear 1 operates as both a gear, and the main shaft. The second gear 2 is commonly splined to the first shaft, thus the transfer of torque from one gear to the other is through the spline. A helical spline 3 between the two can be designed such that it imparts equal and opposite axial forces on the two individual components using the torque flowing through the joint.
