Roller coater process can take various forms depending on businesses, with either one roller or several ones (applying roller in contact with the substrate, meter/dosing roller to control quantity of liquid etc). The configuration described in this document is the one mostly used in the glass industry, with one applying roller in rubber (EPDM) and stainless steel dosing roller, as in the figure below: With current roller coater process, it is possible to deposit coatings fully covering the substrate, which is the most common use for most businesses (glass, wood, plastic). By engraving rollers (gravure, offset, flexography), it is also possible to deposit localized coatings with defined pattern. However, to be able to vary designs, one engraving is needed for each design, which is both very costly and not industrially relevant if several patterns are needed. Also, in some case, this kind of designs for coating on a defined part only applies to one specific size of substrate. If there are different substrate sizes, several designs are needed.
