Renewable Australia and the Australian Solar Institute (ASI) are government-funded initiatives set up as part of the government's Clean Energy Initiative to foster the development and commercialisation of Australian technologies. ASI investment money, which comes from the Federal government, is to be used to leverage industrial investment -whether it be international or local - and research investment - international or local - into Australia-based research activity. Mark Twidell describes the focus as being on research that can be applied commercially - technologies need to show cost reduction and increased efficiency in generation. They should also help tackle some of the barriers that are currently preventing solar technologies from being deployed without specific incentives.
