John McCarthy's Partnership, Collaborative Planning and Urban Regeneration is an addition to a debate and research agenda that can only benefit from more empirical data and detailed case studies. This debate is on the communicative and collaborative turns in planning, and it has been raging since the mid-1990s (Innes, 1995; Healey, 1996; Huxley and Yiftachel, 2000; Roy, 2001; Brand and Gaffikin, 2007) Proponents of communicative and collaborative planning argue that planners and the practice of planning facilitate communication and consensus between interested parties (for example, individual or collective stakeholders, public, private, non-profit, domestic, and foreign) over matters of common concern - matters that are not circumscribed to issues of land use and development (Huxley and Yiftachel, 2000).
