Several previous works have chronicled the holders of the Victoria Cross, and the author of this one is quick to establish the reason why (apart from the fact that there have been a few more awards in recent years) another is justified. His answer is that all previous compilations have listed the holders alphabetically, whereas he has thought it more useful to students of military history to list them in chronological order; this does seem a reasonable proposition.
