摘要

Railroads were once the main transportation mechanism throughout the US, and they still transport a large portion of industrial commerce at a cheaper cost than planes and even trucks. The locations of towns, and their success or demise, often depended on whether or not the railroad ran through them. The history of railroads would not be possible without the state of Indiana, as the major industrial routes to cities like Chicago and St Louis had to build across Indiana; in fact, only two of Indiana's 92 counties do not have a railway system running through it.
