A Companion to Mexican History and Culture features the latest scholarship on this topic written by a variety of international scholars. An introductory section provides an overall context, followed by 40 carefully chosen essays which are separated into sections on the four major chronological eras in Mexican history: Indigenous Cultures before Columbus, Colonial New Spain, and Independent Mexico, which is divided into Republican Century and Revolutionary Century. The essays reveal a rich portrait of the Mexican experience, from the earliest peoples to the present, through the incorporation of ethnic, gender, environmental, cultural studies and visual evidence. Principal historic figures, institutions, the environment, and scientific and medical developments are discussed in individual essays. Recent historical interpretations with critical historiographical sources are also covered. The book covers different and significant stages and events in Mexico that seem different from the many traditional narratives found in older interpretations of Mexican historical development.
