Great Lakes Maritime History Project

The Great Lakes Marine Historical Project is housed by the Milwaukee Public Library. The collection houses over 7,000 files on ships that have sailed on the Great Lakes since 1679, with some coverage of ships still active. "Ships" include diesel-powered sailing ships, barges, cargo vessels, passenger boats, military vessels and pleasure craft. The collection started with the personal collection of Herman G. Runge, which was acquired by the Milwaukee public library in 1959. From this base collection, other collections have been added as well as continued donations by other maritime historians.
