摘要

When done well, the singing and dancing and acting in musical theatre blend professionally together and seem natural. These skills - and usually more - are needed and expected from actors and singers performing in musicals like Applause or Carousel, Evita or Fiddler on the Roof, Hello! Dolly! and The King and I, My Fair Lady and Oklahoma!, State Fair and Wicked. Yet the work involved in getting it right is often hidden away in rehearsals and auditions, as the actor/singer selects the piece, interprets the music and lyrics and context, performs it and tries to keep it fresh and interesting and aspires to make it true and original. Some singers put their own stamp on a song, such as Elaine Paige with Florence in Chess (Broadway premiere 1988) by Andersson and Ulvaeus, or Robert Morse with J. Pierpont Finch in How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying (Broadway premiere 1961) music and lyrics by Frank Loesser.
