When done well, the singing and dancing and acting in musical theatre blend professionally together and seem natural. These skills - and usually more - are needed and expected from actors and singers performing in musicals like Applause or Carousel, Evita or Fiddler on the Roof, Hello! Dolly! and The King and I, My Fair Lady and Oklahoma!, State Fair and Wicked. Yet the work involved in getting it right is often hidden away in rehearsals and auditions, as the actor/singer selects the piece, interprets the music and lyrics and context, performs it and tries to keep it fresh and interesting and aspires to make it true and original.
