Student's Dictionary of Psychology and Neuroscience (6th edition)

In the heedless inconsiderate manner of (relative) youth, I seem to have mislaid or discarded the first two years' issues of Reference Reviews. I therefore have no immediate record of what books I reviewed in issue number one, back in 1987. The earliest issue of this journal that I possess is Volume 3(1) 1989, in which I reviewed Lexicon of Psychology, Psychiatry & Neuroscience and Dictionary of Behavioral Assessment Techniques. The students I was advising then are now elderly professors. Their children, indeed, have long since qualified and presumably no longer need advice on their professional vocabularies. Since then, 30 years have rolled by, bringing innumerable professional and personal triumphs and traumas, but, apart from these, they have been punctuated at all frequent intervals by the arrival of parcels from the successive editors of Reference Reviews, each containing yet another dictionary of psychology. There was a time when it seemed to me that every retired scientist I knew was writing a book on the philosophy of science, and all the psychologists were drafting dictionaries. Once in a while, it seemed possible that the spate was drying up, but then yet another specimen came along.
