Magnetic particle testing by British Engineering Services revealed that all the wheels have "widespread serious cracking". The wheels, cast in 2010 and 2011 by West Midlands-based Boro Foundry, have now been returned to the foundry. Since then they have been machined, assembled onto their axles and balanced at two other sites. It follows the discovery of cracking in one wheel earlier in 2021, leading to tests on the other five to establish if they were also affected.
