BASED AT Burton upon Trent, Clayton is the only firm in the UK that still builds new locos on a regular basis. At the moment it has a full order book, with products being built for various contracts in the UK and for export. Currently under construction are three 1% ton 4wBE locos for a mine in Austria - CE B4648.1 to 3. Normally the frames are out sourced, but in this case everything has been produced in house. The design is probably one of the best sellers of all time, dating back to 1969, with examples working in mines all over the world. Many were built for the UK and were used for early tunnelling contracts, but times have changed. Such contracts are now much larger, mainly using boring machines, and as a result more powerful locos are required. A couple of firms still have examples of the small locos, but there are now a number with preservation groups, the majority of them in working order.
