Spring Galas

The generally good sunny weather of early May was a welcome change for several diesel galas, with large turnouts benefiting from the excellent conditions. Probably one of the most unusual but fascinating galas of the year so far has been the Keighley & Worth Valley Railways Diesel and Mixed Traffic gala, which produced some quite extraordinary loco combinations, see RI July p8 for an example. Such variety is vital to maintain and grow interest in our heritage railways, so hats off to the organisers for being so bold. Visiting locomotives added more variety at most events, and this was certainly the case at the annual Swanage Railway's diesel gala, with visiting Sulzer Type 2s D7535 and 26007 being notably popular.
