Engines being built, repaired or undergoing heavy overhauls is something the public rarely gets to see, and both of these books take you behind the scenes at several facilities, most of which are now just part of history. The Midland Region volume looks at Crewe, Derby and Harwich, with the images covering the steam era. Aside from the various locomotives, the photos provide a glimpse of what the infrastructure inside each works was like.
