Once again, entries to the Railways Illustrated photographic competition were plentiful, and up on last year. But what was most obvious this year was that the standard was much higher than previous years - there were certainly a greater number of good, potentially winning pictures to look through and judge. This, of course, made things more time-consuming and more difficult, but that was a good thing. The fact there was more discussion and debate among the judges was welcomed. Judging competitions like this is always difficult because we all have such different opinions, but we were unanimous on the overall winner and some of the other category winners also stood head and shoulders above the rest. One overriding theme of the winners was, on the whole, they were everyday scenes -trains you'd expect to see in a location any day of the week. While this meant the photographers could have - we don't know! -tried several times to get the perfect composition for a theme they had identified -the final, submitted entries were top drawer.
