Above: Diesel locos were also maintained at Reddish, and they, along with the Class 506 EMUs, kept the depot open for another two years after the end of the Woodhead route and its 76s. On Saturday April 14 1979, 76001 and 25056 stand in the depot waiting for the Monday shift to start work on them again. The last diesel -withdrawn 25294 - left in May 1983, and the last locos, 76004/052/055, departed on December 1 for scrap. The depot remained intact until 1989 when it was demolished, although the site remained as wasteland for many years afterwards. Below Left: Considering that in 1978 Class 40s were being withdrawn as 'life expired', the decision to repair 40044 after it collided at Chinley in September 1978 seemed strange. The damaged loco stands on Reddish on October 1 before moving to Crewe Works where it spent several months before being rebuilt and did not return to traffic until March 1980.
