Last month I wrote about our profession's "Road to the Future"—that is, engineering employees. I addressed the need for a refocused effort in education. In the next several months, I plan to continue talking about education in more detail. Education may mean different things to different people. Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, for example, defines education as "the action or process of being educated . . . ." Definitions of the verb form are more enlightening: "To educate" means ". . . to provide schooling for ... to train by formal instruction and supervised practice ... to develop mentally." These all imply that the individual being educated is raised from a pre-existing level of knowledge or skill to a higher one.
