The energy storage systems (ESSs) for the railway system have been important technologies to stabilize the power supply or to reduce the energy consumption. In recent years, the energy storage media have developed remarkably. Therefore, the railway operators and the manufacturers need to standardize the methods to design the specific requirements of the characteristics and tests for the ESSs. It is also important to contribute to the development of the international standards by using the Japanese experiences of the ESSs. In this paper, the author summarizes the recent activities of standardization in the field of the railway system, and introduces the development of the international standards in relation to the ESSs.%鉄道用電力貯蔵システム(ESS)は,電力を安定供給するとともに消费ェネルギーをさらに削減するべくここ20年来技術開発と実用化が進められてきたが,気候変動に関する枠組み「パリ協定」を始めとした地球温暖化対策として,あるいは大規模停電などの非常時における走行電源として,近年更なる注目を集めている。
