Increasing Capacity while Minimising Track Wear

Capacity constraint is one of the most significant challenges facing the rail sector. This is particularly evident in densely populated countries where new lines cannot easily be built and in situations where capacity of existing lines is already over-stretched. Whereas the optimum solution to increasing capacity is to introduce double-deck trains, this can be to the detriment of the infrastructure, an equally important criterion for rail operations. By combining double-deck vehicles with its Active Radial Steering, Bombardierrnhas found a solution to this problem, addressing the issue of capacity whilst simultaneously reducing track and wheel wear. This results in lower maintenance requirements, reduced costs, reduced mass and lower energy consumption.
