Russian Railways is working on a number of projects to improve its productivity and efficiency in the short term, but fundamental research now underway will form the scientific and theoretical foundation for future enhancements. As the backbone of Russia's transport system, the national rail network is facing major challenges to accommodate the growing volumes of freight and passenger traffic and support economic growth. These emerging capacity problems are being exacerbated by the inevitably slow pace of infrastructure development.
