At first glance, it would be logical to conclude that the start of 2015 was a watershed moment in the postwar history of Poland's railways. After two decades of falling passenger numbers, the first signs have appeared that passengers are coming back to rail (Table Ⅰ), with national long-distance operator PKP Intercity reporting an upturn in both passenger journeys and passenger-km after two decades of almost relentless decline. Around €5bn has been allocated for investment in the national rail network during the EU's 2014-20 budget period. This is the second big tranche of money to be allocated for Poland's railways, which have seen a recent wave of investment following years of neglect. Thanks to the European Union's Cohesion Fund, infrastructure manager PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe has been able to replace the track, signalling and electrification and upgrade other infrastructure on a number of key routes, including Warszawa - Gdansk - Gdynia, Warszawa - Krakow and Warszawa -Wroclaw. Virtually all of the Warszawa - Lodz line has been renewed.
