Despite almost two years of preparation, New York Metropolitan Transporta-tion Authority announced on January 3 that it had decided to drop its plans for a 15-month blockade to repair the L-Canarsie Subway line between Brooklyn and Manhattan, which had been expected to start in April. Instead, it has accepted recommendations put forward by academics and engineering specialists to limit the anticipated disruption.
