Dare to be Different?

What is "canon?" I'm not talking about the heavy piece of artillery favored by one Wile E. Coyote or the camera company from Japan. Canon is defined as "the body of rules, principles, or standards accepted as axiomatic and universally binding in a field of study or art." Just about all aspects of our lives are dictated by the notion of canon. There is a perceived "right" way and a perceived "wrong" way to do things. The same is true for model railroading. There are certain aspects of our hobby which seem to be woven into the very fabric of the hobby that we don't ever think to question them; we just follow them. In a lot of cases, there are very good reasons for that. A certain canonical method could truly work well. In other cases, there may be a different solution that would work better for you.
