A £100 million contract has been awarded for a scheme that aims to ease three major bottlenecks on the Tyne & Wear Metro by the end of next year. Almost two miles of track on three sections between Pelaw and Bede stations will be doubled, by electrifying an existing freight line. This will create capacity for an extra 24,000 passenger journeys a day (a 20% uplift), reduce journey times, and improve reliability. The contract has been awarded to the Buckingham Group, which was responsible for the new temporary Metro depot at Howdon last year. It takes Metro owner and operational manager Nexus a significant stage further in its improvement of the network, which also comprises construction of a new depot at Gosforth for its Stadler train fleet.
