Vandalism is sadly an all-too-pervasive blight on the railways, with Britain's 20,000 miles of track a routine target for the likes of graffiti artists and cable thieves. Despite an increase in educational campaigns, video surveillance and tougher penalties (including a £1,000 fine for trespass), this criminal behaviour continues to be a leading cause of delays. Trains have to be removed from service for cleaning, and repairs have to be made to damaged infrastructure.
