Siemens has been named as preferred bidder for the Thameslink rolling stock contract. Once the contract is finalised, the German-based company will be making 1,200 new carriages using the new generation of its Desiro design, the Desiro City. Siemens will build the trains in Germany, but the company is to build two maintenance depots in the UK - one near Crawley and the other in Haringey. It will also be doing some assembly work at its factory in Tyne and Wear. The DfT says the contract will create 2,000 new UK jobs, which will mainly be in maintenance. Rail minister Theresa Villiers said that naming Siemens preferred bidder represented 'the best value for money for taxpayers'. Steve Scrimshaw, managing director for Siemens' rolling stock business in the UK, said: We are delighted to have been selected as preferred bidder for the Thameslink Rolling Stock Procurement Programme, and we look forward to working with the Department for Transport to bring the programme to successful fruition.'
