As a result of the intensive research work undertaken by the railways in recent years We now know a great deal about the origin of railway noise and about the possibilities for reducing it. The main findings from the research are as follows: 1. The basic significance of rolling noise; 2. The pronounced effect of the roughness of the wheel tread and of the rail surface on rolling noise; 3. The role of cast-iron blocks in producing a rough wheel tread.
