Liberalisation of the European telecommunications market in 1998 has made it possible for railways to offer their services to outside customers. On SNCB, it is the B-Telecom Division which is responsible for exploiting this broad human and technical potential. The history of the railways has very often evolved in parallel with that of telecommunications. From the beginnings of the railways, the need to communicate was self-evident quite simply for safety and information needs.
