It has become common practice in the ailways for the last two to three decades to ill upon the services of consultants. There was no section on consultants in the first twenty editions of Jane's World Railways which began publication in 1951, but the 1980-81 edition already mentioned some one hundred consultancy services and the 1999-2000 edition, some 2000. The remarkable growth in business for consultancy firms in the railway sector dates in fact only from the 1970's, i.e. practically from the time when the rail business ceased to expand practically everywhere.
