"Bad data is killing the railroads," stated the distinguished professor in his presentation at an annual North American Operations Research (OR) conference. He continued: "Railroad management is failing in handling its responsibility to properly manage the railroads." Fear not, however, for the professor went on to promote the use of his mathematical planning models that promise to save the roads from their self-destructing practices. When I later asked the professor why he thought the data were now bad, for indeed they are the same, if not better, data than the railroads have been collecting, messaging, and distributing for years, he had no response.
