The Belgian National Railway Company was set up in 1926 to operate the State rail network for a period of 75 years. In October 1992, it became a Public Limited Company (societe anonyme de droit public) and the right to operate the network was granted for an indefinite period. At present the company employs some 42.000 staff and the main traffic indicators are as follows: Mean market shares for rail traffic (estimated in terms of passenger-km and tonne-km in relation to the total travel and forwarding distances of persons and goods) are around 6 % for the carriage of passengers and 15 % for the carriage of freight.
