The Los Angeles METRO lightens the load in the 'City of Cars'

A gigantic public transport system which will have 700 km of metro, 60 stations and 4,200 buses by the year 2010, is already giving private motoring keen competition. Art in stations makes trips in the Metro an exciting experience. Private motoring in Los Angeles - the city of cars - is losing territory, railway territory, after a potent Southern Californian cocktail. This consists of a rapidly developed public transport system with trains meeting buses, mixed with growing environmental awareness amongst the city's many millions of inhabitants. Add daily chaos on the streets and stress and car fumes together with a spicy drop of CO_2 and a large drop of increasing petrol prices. This is a dangerous concoction - and in Los Angeles, a sight for sore eyes, as passengers are also spoiled with art and culture, just by looking in the direction of one of the many new stations. At a distance, they are brought into relief, challenging the eye with fascinating shapes and forms, cheerful colours and bold arches, which visually defy gravity.
