In the first year-on-year decrease in traffic since 2002-03, net tonne-km moved by freight operators last year declined by 9·7% to 21.18 billion, according to ORR's National Rail Trends yearbook for 2007-08 published on July 31 (p9). This excludes movements of infrastructure materials for Network Rail, which at 1·70 billion tonne-km were 25% higher.
