An overview of safety performance in 2008 published by RSSB last month shows that no passenger or workforce fatalities occurred in train accidents last year, which is an unprecedented achievement. The only such fatality over the last four years was the passenger killed by the Grayrigg derailment on February 23 2007.rnFive passengers died from other causes in 2008, the lowest figure ever recorded and 57% of the five-year moving average (5MA). Two of them were using a level crossing adjacent to a station, two were hit by trains because they were standing too close to a platform edge or fell off it, and one fell on an escalator.
