Siemens awarded £24m RCS contract

Siemens Mobility confirmed on January 28 that it had been awarded a £24m contract by Network Rail to supply 'several thousand' GSM-R cab radios for the roll-out of the Railway Communications System. The first batch of digital radios is due be delivered in July, with Siemens also responsible for fitment design to suit each of the 76 cab types in service on the national network.rnOver 200 cabs have been fitted undeT the GSM-R pilot in Strathclyde, running since October 2007 and due for completion this autumn. NR says that the pilot 'has progressed well with strong support from First ScotRail', demonstrating 'consistent on-time performance benefits' during extensive testing.rnNR says that RCS should be working in London and southeast England by 2012, with the entire network operational by 2013. Amongst the first operators to receive radios under the contract announced last month will be DB Schenker, First Great Western, London Midland and Virgin Trains.
