In its annual safety performance report for 2009-10 RSSB explains that it has reverted to the 'railway' year ending on March 31, after changing a few years ago to calendar years in line with recommended EU practice.rnMost safety indicators on Network Rail continue to improve except for those where the railway only has limited ability to control the circumstances. Of the 298 fatalities on the railway, 236 were believed to be suicides, 49 were trespassing, 12 were on level crossings, and one fell onto the track from outside railway property.
